Jennifer Jane Nicely
Session date: 6/26/2018
Session location: The Growing Project - Fort Collins, CO
Meet Jennifer Jane Nicely. Jennifer is from East Tennessee, near Knoxville and the Great Smoky Mountains. She lived in Nashville on and off over the years. “After being back there for almost a year, in 2017 I decided I needed a real chance of scenery. I wanted to live in the western part of the U.S. and I was drawn to the Denver area for various reasons. I had a good feeling about it. So I came out here about a year ago and I haven’t regretted it for a second.”
Jennifer started writing songs on guitar when she was about 11 years old. “Putting poetry to music. Although songwriting has always been a very personal thing for me, from the beginning it seemed natural to share it.” Jennifer started performing at open mic nights, and had a band in high school. When she was 21 years old she moved to Nashville and started performing there as a singer/songwriter.
Jennifer says that her earliest memories of music are also her deepest influences. Country and western, bluegrass, and old-timey mountain music. “Those first deep loves still guide me musically, even if it’s not readily detectable in my own songs.”
“Writing and performing still have a hold on me for sure; when I have stepped away from music in this way I have suffered. What a mystery and also a journey. I think there is something about singing in particular that feels like I'm expressing something I can’t convey in any other way.”
Right now, Jennifer is focusing on getting a band together in Colorado. She’s ready to welcome the expansion that comes along with that. She’s also making plans for recording a new album as well. “The new collection of songs has been strongly influenced by living in the west and traveling out here”.
