Meet Danielle Ate the Sandwich! Danielle was born and raised in Eastern Nebraska, and moved to Colorado with her family in 2000. She arrived in Fort Collins in 2004 and even though she has moved to a few different places over the course of her time here, she always seems to find her way home to Fort Collins.
Danielle got her start playing open mic nights while attending Colorado State University in 2006. She then quit her "day job" to pursue music full time in 2009. She has been a full time, independent, touring, singer/songwriter ever since! Her influences are varied, and include the likes of Paul Simon, Peggy Lee, Blossom Dearie, Bob Dylan, Ben Gibbard, and Taylor Swift.
When asked what attracts her to the ukulele, Danielle earnestly replied "I'll be honest, I like that it's cute and easy to play, but the intonation and tone really compliment my voice and songwriting style. After learning more and getting involved in the ukulele scene, I've found it's an amazing place for people to come as they are to have fun and enjoy playing music. It isn't surrounded by the same pretension as other instrument and music scenes. I like when people are nice and the ukulele attracts nice people."
Danielle was kind enough to share a funny story from the road - "I'm very used to people commenting on my band name. "What kind of sandwich was it?" is the question I get the most. One time on tour, at a gas station in Iowa after paying for my gas and candy, the cashier asked "What kind of sandwich was it?" I was shocked that she would know my music and be joking around with me. Right before I muttered the name of the best sandwich I could think of, the guy behind me steps up and says "hand and cheese."... She was just asking him what kind of sandwich it was, so he could buy it. Some musicians have crazy stories about sex and drugs, and I have that one."
Danielle has a big East Coast tour coming up at the end of August and a few shows in Colorado in September. Touring has been a great way for Danielle to get out and connect with fans far and wide, but she has been craving community, so she plans to scale down the touring and focus on doing more things locally. It is her dream to someday host a late night talk show, and if you've ever had the pleasure of seeing Danielle play live, you would agree that this is a very attainable goal!
In the end, for those of you wondering, there is no story behind her band name. She just likes sandwiches and needed to come up with something when she made her myspace page!
