Meet Cary Morin. Cary grew up in Great Falls, MT and moved to Colorado in 1983. He originally landed in Fort Collins to pursue a degree in visual arts. Cary discovered and has been playing music since he was just 7 years old, when he began taking piano lessons.
Cary's influences have varied and developed over the years. When he was a kid he enjoyed stride piano and rag. These days influences include Neil Young, Chet Atkins, Bob Marley, Leo Kottke, Andre Segovia, and many more!
When asked for a memorable moment or story from the road, Cary replied "Playing the Harvest Blues Festival in Monaghan Town, Ireland. It was a small town and the folks were just so welcoming and nice. Our favorite band there was an Irish band called Crow Black Chicken (the name comes from a Ry Cooder song). These guys were the epitome of blues rock and soul. Even 83 year old southern bluesman Leo Bud Welch was dancing and drinking whiskey to these guys. I'd love to bring them to the U.S. sometimes."
One of Cary's most memorable performances was the first time he went to Paris to perform at The Paris Jazz Festival. He had just started playing piedmont style blues guitar and was very nervous to play such a big show. Cary met Jean Jacques Milteau, a famous French harp player at the festival. Several years, Jacques made a guest appearance on Cary's album Tiny Town.
Cary was awarded the 2018 Native Arts & Culture Fellowship, for which he is very grateful. The fellowship will help him fund both a tour and an album this year. He is also up for a 2018 Independent Music Award for best blues album, for his recent release, 'Cradle to the Grave'. The ceremony is at The Lincoln Center in NYC on March 31st, and Cary has been asked to perform for it!
Cary is an artist who thrives on the road. In his words, he never tires of it. He has a new album coming out in September (2018). The Album will be a mix of solo and trio tunes. The band portion was recorded in eTown studios with James Tuttle and produced by bassist Kim Stone. The solo tunes were recorded with Rich Werdes at Sound Underground. Keep an eye out for the release on Cary's website.
